Camping is one of the most recreational activities that can be done by the whole family or just a group of friends. You can plan this for a long weekend, even for a week.
Many think, camping, why? It’s outdoor, nothing to do, it’s boring. Not true, there is much that can be done and there are different types of amenities that can be used. Many of you have campgrounds in your area.
If you want something a little more adventurous or away from home, there are many national parks to visit.
There are also privately owned campgrounds that you can stay at which may provide just more than a patch of dirt. Some prefer to camp outside in their tents and sleeping bags. They don’t mind the fact that they don’t have certain amenities that we are all used to. For those that just can’t deal with completely being outdoors, you can rent a camper, gives you a little more privacy.
Of course, you can always get an RV, which allows you to have TV, AC, bathrooms, kitchens and showers. Whichever option you choose, you still can enjoy what nature gives you. If you have decided to go camping, make sure to tell someone where you are planning to go. Let them know how long your trip will last and the date of your return. Should you decide to extend your trip, make sure to let someone know your plans changed.
ACTIVITIES
Camping is not just putting up a tent and sitting there all day until night fall. There is much more you can do. You can go hiking, fishing, hill walking, canoeing, mountain biking and swimming. In some cases you can go backpacking. Each day you can do something different. It is a trip that will help you relax, bond and enjoy nature to the fullest.
EQUIPMENT
When planning this trip, make sure to do a check list. You need to make sure you take everything you may need for this trip. Make sure that the first thing on your list is a first aid kit, which is very important. Here are a few other items you should have: flashlight, batteries, sleeping bags, hammer (drive tent spikes into the ground), raincoats, boots, fishing poles, bug spray, personal care products, coolers, chairs, ropes and sunscreen. This is a list of only a few of the items you will need. What you take with you depends on the length of your trip, what you have planned and the area you will be camping in. You will definitely want to have a compass or a GPS with you; it will come in handy at some point.
INFORM YOURSELF
Once you choose the location for camping, obtain a map of the area. Get to know the location you will be visiting. You will want to know all the rules and regulations of this camp ground. Contact the location and make sure there aren’t any surprises when you get there. Some locations may require some type of permit, whether it’s for camping or fishing, etc. If you are planning to travel with a pet, you want to make sure that you can keep it with you on the campgrounds. Check the weather forecast for the location you have picked. No matter what location you choose, make sure it is well known area. Try to stay away from campsites you have never heard of.
BE RESPONSIBLE
When camping, make sure that you keep safe most of all. Don’t camp near water, trails or other campsites. Make sure you have some distance, at least 200 feet. Always carry a trash bag, don’t litter, and keep the area clean. If you are planning to use a tent, make sure the area you place the tent is a non-vegetated area and don’t dig trenches around it. When cooking, consider using a camp stove instead of building a fire. If you must build a fire, make sure to clean the area of tree limbs, grass or leaves, don't allow the fire to spread. Let the fire burn down to ashes and always pour water over it to make sure it is completely out.
ANIMALS
When camping, you will definitely encounter some animals. Make sure to adhere to the guidelines posted by the campgrounds. Do not feed the animals, no matter how cute they may be. Also, don’t leave any trash lying around or scraps of food; this will attract hungry animals to your campsite. Most of the animals you will run into are raccoons, possums, squirrels, etc. But in some very rare occasions, depends the area you are camping in, you may run into to Cougars, Mountain Lions or Bears. Make sure to have read up on any tips that can help you get away. One thing that everyone knows is that animals can sense fear. No matter what, try to keep calm.
The camping trip will be a fun trip for the group, family or friends. You will have many great memories and most likely do it again. It is one of the most relaxing vacations you may take ever. This gives you a chance to bond with your family or friends, get outdoors, and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Have fun!!
