Many of us really aren’t very eco-conscious and don’t really concern ourselves with saving a few dollars on the electric bill. We go months like this until we really take a good look at our monthly bill. But before you go out and start spending money on large appliances you really can’t afford, try checking out the web.
There are websites out there that can help you cut back on electricity without spending large amounts of money, such as Energyideas.org. It shows you how to reduce the consumption of electricity by just doing a few simple steps. You can save a few dollars by just unplugging unused appliances, washing full loads of laundry, using the dishwasher when it’s full instead of washing the dishes in the sink.
You can also contact the electric company; they can have someone check your home to make sure energy is not being wasted. If you still are considering purchasing the big ticket items, then make sure to do some research. Make sure these appliances are eco-friendly and are labeled “Energy Star” which are labeled by the DOE and EPA. Here are a few more tips on saving a few dollars.
CEILING FANS
During the summertime, raise the thermostat and turn on the fans. The fans will actually move the air around and make it cooler. It has the same effect as turning down the A/C.
FLOURESCENT LAMPS
Compact fluorescent lamps use up to 75% than regular bulbs. They are a bit more expensive but that last 10 times more making them more efficient.
TURN THE LIGHTS OFF
An easy way to save money on your light bill is to simply turn the lights off. If you’re not in the room, don’t leave them on. During the daytime, open the blinds and your curtains, use the sun’s natural light.
THERMOSTAT
Keep your thermostat at a set temperature during the winter and summer days. If it is continually adjusted, it will make the unit work harder, using up more energy. If you are going away on vacation, shut it off or set the thermostat at a higher temperature so you can save a little money.
OVEN / SMALL APPLIANCES
Instead of using the oven to warm up pizza, roast a chicken, or even bake, you might want to consider using a toaster oven. There are many that are equipped to even roast a turkey. Since they are smaller, it will take less time to warm up and actually start cooking. Whenever possible, use the microwave.
Also, when choosing toaster ovens, toasters, coffee pots, blenders, etc use smaller ones. They work just as well as all other appliances and use less energy. Make sure that once you are done using them, unplug them. Unplugging them actually saves you a few extra dollars.
