It’s winter and the majority of the states have temperatures 40 and below. It’s cold, windy and snowing. The only thing anyone wants to do is stay inside. We believe there is nothing to do during the winter, except shovel snow day after day. In the morning it takes at least 15 extra minutes to get yourself and the children ready to head out. The only ones that seem to enjoy this weather are the children. They love to go out and play with the snow, building snowmen and forts. Throwing snowballs at each other and sledding. It seems as though they have the right idea. Of course, parents don’t like to let them out too often in fear that they may get sick.
Adults, however, are a different story. Many seem to believe there just isn’t anything to do. The only thing they can think of is going away, at least a week to a place with warm climate. That’s just not enough because they have to return back home to the cold. Once home they go back to their old routine. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are so many things to do besides hiding inside until spring comes along. How about going away for the weekend and enjoy special outings.
For the adults, plan a special weekend trip to a nice little ski lodge. It can be a romantic and fun getaway. Plan such activities as skiing or snowboarding. Rent a snowmobile and explore the area. Make sure to rent a room with a fireplace, make one night extra special. This time away makes the winter go by even quicker. This also helps us embrace the winter.
For the family, go sledding, ice skating or play hockey. These activities give everyone a boost of energy, allows everyone to enjoy the season and forget the winter blues. It can be even more fun by inviting more families to join in. These activities can be done throughout the winter, making time fly by even quicker.
Another idea is to invite friends and/or family over. Make a fun dinner, rent a few movies, games, etc. This gives everyone the opportunity to get to know each other better and pass the time having fun. Everyone can take part, someone can pick the movies, and another can make that fun dinner or better yet, make it a pot luck dinner.
This is also a good time to catch up on some sleep. During the spring and summer, even the fall, we spend most of our time outside. Running around doing all sorts of things, making sure we take full advantage of the days and nights. Winter time, we do only what is necessary. We go to work, school, store and then run home to hide. Well, then if we are going to do this, let’s take advantage of it. When you look outside and it’s snowing heavily or it’s just too cold to be out there, take a nap. When you wake up you feel fresh and alert.
This is also a great opportunity to make good on some of those New Year’s resolution. The majority of us have the same resolution. We want to lose weight, eat right and exercise. Well during the warmer seasons we tend to avoid doing any of these because we are too busy partying, drinking, traveling, etc. Well during this winter season, instead of binge eating and being idle, take a different approach. Start your diet now by eating healthy, exercising more and watch those extra pounds disappear. By doing this, when the warmer climate finally arrives, you will be ready for the beach.
All these ideas will help you beat the winter blues, allow you to embrace this season and make the best of it. A lot of us, during this time tend to keep the blinds and curtain closed. This is not a good idea. Sunlight gives us energy and without it, we can become depressed. Going outside can help with this but if it’s just too cold, then how about sitting next to a window, reading a good book, watch the children play, etc.
The winter season can be just as much fun as any other season; it’s what you make of it that counts. So instead of hiding, go out as much as you can, make plans to do family outings, go outside and play with the kids, go away for the weekend, etc. The fun doesn’t have to end because the holidays ended. Everyday can be just as fun as the last one. It’s all up to us and our imagination.
