Backache is a common problem for more 70% of Americans. For some the pain is so bad that they can be bedridden for days.
This problem can also cause us to limit the activities we do, at times we can’t do anything at all. Some of the causes of back pain are muscle strains, falls, herniated discs, posture, weight and accidents.
We also hurt our backs because we over do it. We don’t follow instructions very well and we regret it later on when we are in severe pain.
When doing things as heavy lifting, gardening and moving, we should always wear a back brace for support. Also, as silly as it may sound, we should follow the steps given to us on how to bend and pick up items. The biggest mistake we make is we feel continuous pain, and all we do is pop over the counter pain killers. We go days like this and feel no relief. The answer is visiting our physician for a checkup but we don’t. We avoid them like the plague and later on, when we can’t take it anymore we visit the good doctor. By then the problem could be worst because we probably aggravated the condition.
A reminder is that anyone can suffer from back problems, young and old. Don’t think for one moment that because you are in your early 20’s you are invincible. No one is, on the contrary, when you’re in your early 20’s is when you should be more conscientious and make sure not to make the mistake of injuring yourself. But if you do, visit a doctor immediately. Many of us that suffer from back problems could have taken care of the problem at an earlier age. Had we taken the proper steps, we would either not be in so much pain or no pain at all. Now all hope is not lost, there are ways to alleviate or treat back pain.
- Lose weight
- Hot baths
- Mild exercises
- Massages
- Physical therapy
- Wear supportive shoes
- Sit properly
- Avoid stress
If your condition does not improve, your physician may suggest other options, such as:
- Surgery

- Intensive therapy
The key is to take care of ourselves, avoid hurting ourselves and overdoing it. Let’s put it this way, if your child came up to you and told you they didn’t feel well. You notice that within 24 hours, they aren’t any better, what do you do? You take them to the doctor. We should apply this rule to ourselves. We have to make sure we are healthy and take care of ourselves. Why? Well, most of all for yourself and then for those we love, especially if you have children. We want to be able to play with them, have fun and keep up with them. So whenever you feel that twinge, call your doctor, you will thank yourself for it.
