Natural Remedies for Sunburn

We look forward to sunny and warm days because we want to go outside and play.  It’s not just the children that feel cooped up at home all day; the adults feel the same way.

As soon as the weather gets warm, we make plans to spend as much time as possible out in the sun.

It’s time for the beach, barbecues, the lake, the parks, etc.    Who can blame you, the cold has kept you inside for too long.  But we are so happy that we become careless.

You forgot the sunscreen lotion and now you are sunburned.  Now you could just kick yourself but just moving a little is too painful because you are sunburned. Well not to worry, there are different types of remedies you can use to make you feel better.  However, if you notice that you are feeling nauseas, faint, have a fever or are blistering, you need to go to the doctor.  Also, keep in mind it takes three to six months for your skin to get back to normal.  Next time you will sunburn even faster and it can cause skin problems or cancer.  So always be careful and protect your skin.

Milk

A great remedy is milk.  The protein in the milk is soothing and will help cool down the skin.  In a bowl, pour milk and add ice cubes to keep it cold.  Dip the compresses into the bowl and apply to the area.  Every time the compress gets warm, remove it and place a fresh one.  You can also sit in the tub.  Run cold water, add milk and if you can bear it some ice.  It will cool down your skin and relieve the pain, dryness and tightness you feel from the sunburn.

Witch Hazel

For smaller areas use witch hazel, it will treat and soothe the damaged skin from sunburn.  This will prevent your skin from peeling and flaking plus you will heal faster.  To apply, use cotton balls, dab it onto the skin, do not rub it in or it will irritate your skin more.

Oatmeal Water

As odd as this may sound, oatmeal water works wonders when you are sunburned.  In cheesecloth, wrap dry oatmeal and run cool water through it.  In the water, soak compresses and apply it to the area.  Repeat it as often as necessary.  It will soothe the skin and relieve the pain.

Yogurt

Use plain yogurt to cool and soothe the skin.  What you do is apply it to all the sunburned areas.  Once applied, leave it for a few minutes and rinse it off in a cool shower.  Pat your skin dry, avoid rubbing your skin since it will only irritate it more.

Tea Bags

If your eyelids are sunburned, the best thing is to apply tea bags.  Soak them in cool water and apply them to the eyelids, this will reduce the swelling and help relieve the pain.

Aloe

Aloe is found to help heal wounds.  Break off a leaf from the aloe plant and apply the juice.  Make sure you’re not allergic to aloe.  You can also put the leaf in the refrigerator first so that it can get cold and then apply the juice.  It will cool off the skin, soothe it and make sure to heal it without leaving any scars.
