How to Plan a Summer Vacation on a Budget

The majority of family vacations are taken during the summer.  This is the best time since the kids are out of school.  Most families plan this family vacation at least six months or more in advance.

The reason they do this is to schedule the time, since they take a week or two and to save money.  Nowadays, the issue is truly money.

Families have had to make changes in their spending in order to keep up with the normal bills, such as mortgages, car payments, insurance, etc.

Due to this they can't save as much as they would love to for their vacation.  They save as much as they can and when on vacation, they will skip a lot of fun things for lack of money.  That is a shame, since the vacation should be everything you ever wanted.  Fun for the whole family and a time to bond.  Well, families don't have to cut corners on their vacations, there are ways to work around the money situation.  Even on a budget the families can still have the vacation of their dreams.  They can have lots of fun, enjoy everything they want and be happy.

Sure, many are wondering how can they do this, since the economy is so bad.  There is your answer.  Right now, due to the economy, you can get what you want for a very low, low price.  Start with the resorts.  Many have probably booked hotels that are far from the perfect location and probably hotels/motels that you would normally not choose.  Well, since you have kids, the first thing to check is the resorts that allow kids to stay free.  These resorts will also offer free breakfast or dinner for the kids.  Right there alone, you have save some money.

Another way to save money is to rent villas or condos at a lower cost.  Here the family can save money on breakfast, snacks and dinners.  They can buy groceries.  Make sure to purchase snacks and cereals the kids will enjoy.  Eating out daily while on vacation can add up and quickly.  If it's an exclusive resort you would like to stay in, you still can do it.  Just be flexible with your dates.  Most of them will offer special rates if arriving mid-week, staying over a Saturday, etc.

Try the all-inclusive packages.  These will include the resorts and many of them will include your meals.  As a bonus, these packages will also include some type of activity.  One thing to remember, many resorts, when it comes to the kids, will offer free programs that way they will have plenty to do.  A good vacation for all can be a cruise.  Here the family will have all they need.  This includes your room, meals and fun for all.  You can add extras, just make sure that it's truly worth it.

When planning the vacation, you can save money on the airfare.  Visit websites such as Orbitz, Expedia, Priceline.  Once in a while check certain airlines, such as Southwest or JetBlue.  Before booking the airfare, make sure you up to date with all the fees they may have.  Many airlines are now charging outrageous fees, even for carry-ons.  Don't be afraid to add travel insurance to any of your plans.  This is a smart thing to do.  Anything can happen, someone can get sick, airlines can go bankrupt or natural disasters.  These are things out of one's control and by adding insurance, we know no matter what, we won't lose the money.

If even with all these suggestions, it's still too much money, why not consider a road trip.  In our own states there are plenty of things to see and do for everyone.  This is what a lot of families are doing in order to enjoy a vacation.  Maybe consider spending the week on the beach.  If there are theme parks in your area or nearby, why not take a road trip to that part of the state.  Stay at a resort in that area and do a little sightseeing.  For instance, if you live in Florida, there is plenty to do in your own state.  For those living in New England, traveling up and down the east coast can be lots of fun.

Whether on a road trip or a vacation, you should always carry a back pack.  Kids get hungry all the time and are thirsty.  Make sure to pack some snacks and bottled water.  This is a good idea if visiting the theme parks or the beach.  Doing this will save you some money so that you can use it for something else that can be fun for all.

No matter when you choose to vacation, always plan.  Check the Sunday newspapers travel section.  The travel industry always have special offers.  If you can be very flexible with your dates, sometimes, you can save money by planning the vacation just a few weeks in advance.  When the bookings are low, the airlines, resorts and cruise lines will do whatever they can to fill the space up.

Just because things are a bit tight, it doesn't mean you have to a horrible vacation, go hungry or skip on the fun.  With a little planning, research and using the tools the internet offers you, you can plan the perfect dream vacation without spending a fortune.  So start planning, it's time for the family to have fun!
