We are always looking through the store flyers, trying to find the best deal for items we need or think we need.
As soon as we see the best deal possible, we run to the store to pick up the items. However, not everything we need we should buy brand new.
Considering this, it means we are not truly saving as much as we thought. When planning a purchase, consider buying it used. Here are a few items that you should reconsider.
Tools
Everyone misplaces tools, they get lost or they break. If its simple tools you need such as hammers, wrenches, gardening tools, consider purchasing them used. You can find many of these at garage or yard sales. If it’s a tool you need for a quick fix and won’t be using it often, consider borrowing it.
Electronics / Cell Phones
These can be quite expensive and can set us back a bit, especially if they are new products on the market. Consider purchasing these items refurbished. They are just as good as if they came right out of the box. These items are taken back to the store for different reasons but they fix them up and are as good as new. Plus since it’s an open item, they sell it at a much lower price. Just make sure to have a good warranty.
Exercise Equipment
So you have decided to exercise daily and want a new treadmill or weights. Don’t run to the store and spend way too much money on these items. People, everyday are purchasing these items, leave it in a corner collecting dust and next thing you know, two months down the road, selling it. Take advantage of this and buy it at a lesser price. Test out the machines, make sure they are ok. Check out Craigslist, yard sales, classifieds, they always have these listed.
Video Games
There are new ones coming out all the times and we want them. This is one item you can save a lot of money on. First of all, maybe a buddy has the game and has already finished it. See if you can borrow it; swap with them a game they might want to play. Consider purchasing them used at one of the reputable video stores. One other thing to consider, since we know we will get tired of it, maybe rent it. No need to run out and spend $50.00 on an item that will be put on a shelf to collect dust.
Baby Clothes
The baby is almost here and we want to have everything ready for his/her arrival. We want everything new but is that a good idea? Babies grow very fast and an outfit they wear today will not fit them a couple months down the road. Purchase what you can at yard sales, thrift stores, or Craigslist. Take what friends and families will pass on to you, including furniture, car seats, high chairs, playpens, etc. Save all the money you can, you will need it for formula, baby food and to buy lots of diapers.
Home Décor
We want to decorate our homes as much as possible, make it feel special. Some of these decorations, whether paintings, silk flowers, corner tables, etc can get pricey. Check your area or the newspaper and on a Saturday, bright and earlier go to garage or yard sales. You will be surprised the things you can find. Some things are brand new; others only need a touch up.
