We all need our cars to be in perfect running condition. We can’t live without them; this is what takes us to work, our children to school, shopping, road trips, etc.
Whether it’s a new or a used car, it needs maintenance. The usual maintenance is oil change every 3,000 miles, alignment, tire rotation or new tires. Most of these services we can get at any repair shop.
But what about serious problems, such as engine trouble, electrical shorts, air conditioner or heat, what do you do then?
First of all, remember this, it can happen to both new and used cars. Many think that new cars are problem free, not always, at least not in the beginning. Where do you take your car? How do you know if the shop is the right one for your car? Before you take your car in, make sure you do a little background check on the repair shop.
You have to make sure they are reputable. The reason, well, we have all heard the stories and seen reports on the news as to how many are taken advantage. You would hope that when you take your car in the mechanic is honest with you. Of course, that is not always the case. Here are few things you didn’t know.
SECOND OPINION
If you expect to pay over $250 or more on repairs, you should get a second opinion. When you take your car in, make sure to tell them you want an estimate. These will allow them to compete for your business and give you a better price. Don’t let them intimidate you in leaving your car with them.
THE RIGHT GARAGE
Not every garage you go to can help you out. If you have a car with a warranty, make sure to take it to the dealer but make sure to ask them what your out of pocket cost will be. If you are going to an independent dealer, make sure they can do the work you need. Not all shops are set up to handle all types of services even though they will try to convince you that they can.
BEWARE OF CHARGES
You have to be very careful; there are times you will pay for repairs or services that were never performed. Whenever you pick up your car, ask them to show you the parts they removed. You do have the right to examine your car. Many people have paid for parts that were never placed in their cars. If you feel this has happened, make sure to report it immediately.
UNNECESSARY REPAIRS
Repair shops at time will add cost of repairs to your bill that you did not request. When you drop off your car, let them know that all repairs must be approved by you and if they replace parts without your approval, that will be their expense not yours. They are the mechanic but it is your car and you don’t need to be surprised with unexpected expenses.
WARRANTY
Check your warranty and go through it completely. Some warranties state that if you get your car repaired elsewhere and it is damaged, the dealer does not have to honor your warranty. Now they will also try to convince you that you must have all services done through them or your warranty is null and void. Don’t fall for it. You can take your car to smaller shops for routine services just make sure to keep all your receipts.
